Switchboard Upgrades

DJ Edwards Solar and Electrical; providing Switchboard upgrades repairs across Brisbane, Gold Coast, Toowoomba and the Sunshine Coast

Why people need a switchboard upgrade

Your switchboard is the nerve centre of your home's electrical system. When it's outdated, undersized, or missing proper safety protection, it creates real risk — and it limits what you can do with your home.

The most common reasons Brisbane homeowners need a switchboard upgrade:

  • Installing solar or a battery — most systems 15+ years old aren't rated for the added load and two-way power flow

  • Adding an EV charger — requires a dedicated circuit and often a capacity upgrade

  • Old ceramic fuses — these need to be replaced with modern circuit breakers and safety switches under current QLD standards

  • Buying or selling a home — a switchboard inspection often flags issues that need remediation

What a switchboard upgrade involves

A switchboard upgrade from DJ Edwards typically includes:

  • Full assessment of your existing switchboard and incoming supply capacity

  • Replacement of old fuse-based boards with a modern circuit breaker panel

  • Installation of safety switches (RCDs) on all required circuits — mandatory under current QLD standards

  • Labelling and documentation of all circuits

  • Testing and certification

In most cases the upgrade is completed in a single day. We'll quote the full scope upfront so there are no surprises.

Safety switches — what's required in QLD

IMG_2981.HEIC

Queensland electrical safety regulations require safety switches (RCDs) on all power and lighting circuits in new installations and when significant electrical work is performed. If your switchboard has no RCDs, or only partial RCD protection, you're not compliant with current standards — and more importantly, you don't have the protection your family deserves.

A safety switch cuts power in as little as 30 milliseconds if it detects a fault. That's fast enough to prevent electrocution. An old ceramic fuse or circuit breaker will not do this.
